Brief History of USAA
Providing relief to the Sarpo people in Liberia.
On July 4, 1991, a few members of the Sarpo Community residing in the United State of America assembled at the home of Mr. Brown Tarley for celebration, lamentation, and reflection. They were celebrating the joy of freedom from the atrocities inflicted upon all Sarpo People living in Liberia, by Charles Taylor and his rebel forces. In December 1989, Charles Taylor led an armed rebellion against the Liberian Government headed by Samuel K. Doe. Few months later, Taylor turned the country into the most violent tribal war Africans had ever witnessed.
Taylor trained thousands of teenage fighters and they laid siege to their own country, Liberia, and the Sarpo Land in Sinoe County, Liberia. They looted everything of value, burned personal properties, raped their own sisters and mothers before killing their devastated bodies.
The July 4th gathering was intended to lament the death of those family members, friends, and other acquaintances. During the time of lamentation on the atrocities against the Sarpo people, the group began to reflect on how to solute stop the killings. It is based on the reflective discussion, the group decided to form an organization to be called The United Sarpo Association in the Americas, with the following goals:
- To create a framework for fostering peace and maintaining unity amongst the Sarpo Community within the United States.
- To empower members of the Sarpo Community to become self-sufficient in food production by designing projects to help farmers with farming education to improve their skills.
